__TOC__

Introduction
The Internet is a vast pool of knowledge and information that should be accessible to all those who wish to learn. With little ownership to its entirety, it is easy for any user to simply create and express opinions to the world. This can sometimes lead to uneasiness through many organizations as this area is not governed. Most government institutions accept this reality, however China has taken a different route. Through a series of censorship, data filtering, and content blocking schemes, the government of China attempts to keep an eye on content that gets through the countries borders. It is estimated that over 30,000 monitor its countries web use to try to ensure that their is no online dissent. [5]

Censorship in China
In China there is heavy sensorship on media and journalists. They are forced to conform to the idealisms of the Communist Chinese party. "In general, China attempts to suppress publication of information related to "subversive" political movements and controversial state actions, including the Tiananmen Square uprising, support for a free Tibet, the Falun Gong spiritual movement, criticism of China's human rights and social justice records, independent news media, and pro-democracy / pro-Western commentary." [2] To say the least, Internet content regulation is heavy and like no other country in the world. This often forces citizens to err on the side of caution when using the Internet and posting content as doing so could land users in legal trouble. Laws tend to be vague and can cover a large grey area of issues which makes it easier to supress individuals.

Content Filtering
IP Address Blocking
China attempts to block access to a website that is determined to be inappropriate for its citizens by blocking both its URL and IP address to ensure that it can not be reached. Sometimes it is more convienient for the entire domain space to be blocked if most websites contained in the domain carry similar content is considered harmful.

Email and Blog Filtering
Email filtering is left up to the Internet service providers instead of being caught elsewhere. The filtering system works similar to how many spam filtering programs would work. The filters search for patterns, and keywords in an attempt to determine if a message is inappropriate or not.[2] It seemed that this filtering, like spam, is inconsistent due to the many encodings and languages that can be used.[2] If a message is thought to have a controversial subject behind it the email would not be sent to the intended destination. Blogging works in a similar manner where keywords or phrases are searched for and blogs are blocked accordingly.

DNS Redirection
Servers in China have been known to redirect users to different addresses than were requested, possibly to in the future lead them to fake webpages or to possibly monitor access to different sites. [3]

HTML Keyword Filtering
This method works by running a webpage through a filtering system that also attempts to detect keywords. Once the software found an invalid keyword, it would truncate the webpage causing the user to see very little of the actual content. [3]

Major Blocked Websites
At some point in time each of these major websites have been blocked on behalf of the Chinese Government. They include media sites, blogging, internet forums, political organizations, and government organizations. For working list of websites blocked you can refer to this site this site. The following is a few of the popular sites that have caused controversy in the Republic of China:

<ul>
<li> Youtube - A popular video sharing site where users can upload, view, and share video clips. [4]
<li> Flickr - An image hosting site, and web services suite. [4]
<li> Human Rights Watch - An organization that researches and promotes human rights. [4]
<li> Amnesty International - An organization devoted to preventing abuse in the world. [4]
</ul>

Conclusions
The content filtering system in China is always evolving and getting better. New systems are implemented all the time and China does little to acknowledge that they actually sensor their data at the border. It can be a bit disturbing that thoughts and speech can not be free and willing. The content filtering system in China attempts to suppress and conform its people through technical means and censorship of to the outside world. It is important that people learn about this system so that they can gain their own views on the subject of Internet regulation. This is just one example of why Network Neutrality is an important concept and should be argued for time to come.
Laws tend to be vague and can cover a large grey area of issues which makes it easier to supress individuals.

Content Blocking
IP Address Blocking
China attempts to block access to a website that is determined to be inappropriate for its citizens by blocking both its URL and IP address to ensure that it can not be reached. Sometimes it is more convienient for the entire domain space to be blocked if most websites contained in the domain carry similar content is considered harmful.

Email Filtering
Email filtering is left up to the Internet service providers instead of being caught elsewhere. The filtering system works similar to how many spam filtering programs would work. The filters search for patterns, and keywords in an attempt to determine if a message is inappropriate or not.[2] It seemed that this filtering, like spam, is inconsistent due to the many encodings and languages that can be used.[2] If a message is thought to have a controversial subject behind it the email would not be sent to the intended destination.

<ul>
</ul>

Conclusions
It can be a bit disturbing that thoughts and speech can not be free and willing. The content filtering system in China attempts to suppress and conform its people through technical means and censorship of to the outside world. It is important that people learn about this system so that they can gain their own views on the subject of Internet regulation. This is just one example of why Network Neutrality is an important concept and should be argued for time to come.

In this tutorial, you have to have a world with some geometrics that you would like to work with. If not, please refer to Creating a new world. In this tutorial, we use our previously created world 'base.wld' and applying textures to each of the objects we have placed in our world.
<br>
Getting Ready
The Material panel should likely be visible during when the world editor is opened. If it is not go to the menu and click Page > Material to view the Material page.
Double click on the black box in the Material panel and the Material Manager is displayed. For in depth descriptions of how each option will affect a material please refer to the Official C4 Engine Wiki under the page Creating a New Material. You should likely only see the Default material when the manager first opens, but you should always create a new material each time you would like to use a different texture in order to keep your work organized. When working on a larger level with many materials it can get very confusing when there are a lot of textures.

Creating a Material
Click on New to create a new material. Name your material MetalBall and click on the Textures tab. This allows you to apply a texture that has been previously imported from a *.tga file. All textures in the C4 Game Engine have the form of *.tex. In this case we will be using textures given with the C4 engine as a Demo. Click on Choose beside Texture map and navigate to Data/Demo/texture. Choose the texture MetalPlate.tex and you will see the material is applied to reflect your change. You may also add a bump mapping to make the texture more realistic. To do this click Choose on the Normal map and navigate to the MetalPlateBump.tex as before. Make sure the boxes beside each texture path is checked to ensure they are applied. You will see a screen similar to the one below.

Applying a Material
Click close to close the Material Manager window. You will see the active material is the MetalBall that we just created. To apply this material to an object in the world select the sphere either in a viewport or the scene graph and click Geometry > Set Material or simply press Ctrl-M. Your material is now set to the sphere! You may use a single material for many objects in your scene. Try applying additional materials to other objects in your scene. Make sure to create a New material each time so to not change textures that are already being used. When you are finished click World > Save and Play World to view your creation. It should look something similar to the following with your chosen textures.

__TOC__
Getting Started
If you find that the world editor geometry, or supplied models do not fit your experimental needs there is an easy solution. The world editor has a function built in that allows you to import models from 3rd party modelling programs such as Maya, 3D Studio Max, or Blender. As long as you can export your file to the Collada file format (*.dae), the world editor is able to open the object. In this tutorial we will be using Audodesk Maya as an example for importing models and using them in a world. Maya does have native .dae export support which we will be using. However, if you find it to be too buggy the easiest solution is to use the Feeling Software Collada Export Plugin for Maya. You may download the required files and activate the plugin for Maya following the instructions on the website. Once finished you are ready to begin exporting your scenes with the plugin which may result in better written *.dae files.

Importing Scene Data
When you are ready to export from Autodesk Maya make sure your entire model is selected and click on File > Export Selection. You will be prompted with a export box, save as Files of Type: DAE_FBX (*.dae) with an appropriate name. In our example it is Waterdrop.dae. If you are using the Feeling Software Plugin make sure to select it from the Save Type and also in the options check Bake Transforms. After files have been exported they should be relocated to the directory ..\C4\Import.

<br>

<br>Start C4 and select Tool > New World. Then choose World > Import Scene

<br>

<br>You will be prompted with an Import Scene dialog where you should navigate to the appropriate file you have exported from Maya and click OK.

<br>

<br>After selecting a Collada file, the imported geometry (as well as materials) will appear in the World Editor. At this point, you may make any changes that you need to in the world editor. Note that during the import process, the World Editor will keep track of the materials used by the imported geometry from Maya. However, each image must be imported using the Importing Textures so that they are in the appropriate *.tex format that the engine can understand. You may then need to hit the Clean button in the Material Manager in order to refresh all of the materials.

Exporting to a Model
When you have made all the required changes to your model, select World > Save as Model

<br>

<br>An Export Model dialog will show up. Give the model a name and be sure to save it in a SUBDIRECTORY of data, if you put it straight in the /data folder your model will not open in the world editor. Click OK to save to *.mdl format that the game engine can recognize.

<br>

Inserting a Model to a world
Now your models are ready to import into a new world or complex world that has been created for an experiment. Controllers can be attatched to these models so that the user may interact with custom objects as the instructor sees fit. Open the world that you would like to work with and then select World > Insert Model.

<br>

<br>The Import Model dialog will prompt you to navigate to your model that you created. Click OK.

<br>

<br>It is now easy to see that your model has been inserted into the world for interaction with the game.

<br>
<br>
Return to RCaragogo
<br>

Tips and Troubleshooting
*Before exporting models to the *.dae format try to scale them to the size that you would like them to be in the world editor. The scaling function was difficult to use and often had undesirable results on my model especially if it was multiple pieces.
*Before exporting models check out in the Maya Window > Hypergraph: Connections and clean up any prior groupings and transforms that you may have made but now have no real effect on your model.
*Make sure to go Modify > Freeze Transforms in maya before exporting so that the collada file is not filled with transforms that are not needed and your model acts appropriately in the world editor.

RCar-A-Go-Go is a Capstone project by McMaster University's first graduating class in the Software Engineering and Game Design program. RCar-A-Go-Go is a 3D game created with the C4 Game Engine by Terathon Software. The software is aimed at providing the Shedden Psychology Lab at McMaster a tool to research the effects video games have on humans. Specifically, the lab hopes to discover the aspects of gaming and its effects on humans due to practice, error detection, and behaviour in response to errors. The main goal of the lab is to understand how well a test subject can handle multiple tasks based on prior gaming experience. RCar-A-Go-Gos main goal is to provide the lab with a tool that creates a consistent and visually immersive environment. Test subjects will then follow scripted experiments in a virtual world set up by the psychologists so that their performance may be logged automatically and then analyzed by the appropriate individuals.
Make a new world
<br>Start C4, when the main menu is displayed, press the ESC key to close it and press the tilde (~) key twice to display the main toolbar.

Click on the Tools menu and select New World, or press Ctrl-N

A new world file is displayed with the name untitled.

Click on the World menu and select Save World As ...

Save it as "Base" or any name you like in the directory "Data/MyGame/world".

To minimize the potential for loss of data, save worlds on a regular basis. When adding major updates, add a version number suffix to the end of the filename, so if the world file gets corrupted at any point it is easy to use the previous version. E.g. the next time the file needs saving, choose Save World As ... and change the name to Base-01, Base-02 etc.
<br>
Creating a Skybox
<br>
Access the Scene Graph by right clicking in a viewport and selecting "Scene Graph"

The Scene Graph will display all of the world's nodes in a hierarchical tree structure, with the Infinite Zone at the root, this is also called the Root Node. As this is a new world file, no nodes have been added to the scene graph yet, by default there is always an Infinite Zone.

With the Scene Graph open, select the first node called Infinite Zone, the selected Node is highlighted in green.

Once highlighted press Ctrl-I or select Get Info from the Node menu. The Node info dialog is displayed for the Infinite Zone, defaulting to the Zone tab. As a Skybox needs to be added to the Infinite Zone, check the Render skybox in this zone check box.

Click OK to close the Node Info dialog. To add the skybox, the skybox page needs to be visible in the editor, from the main menu bar at the top, click on Page and select Skybox.

The Skybox Page is displayed on the Left.

Click on the icon and notice that the cursor turns to a small crosshair, click on the Infinite Zone node in the Scene Graph and the skybox node is attached to the Infinite Zone node. The Scene Graph now looks like this, note that the new node is highlighted in green once it is added.

Press the 1 key or click on the button, to return to the Select Nodes pointer. Open up the Node Info dialog (By pressing Ctrl-I).

Click on the Skybox tab

To add a texture, click on the Arrow on the right of Positive X texture map text box, and the Texture Map dialog is displayed. If the demo is being used to work through this tutorial, the textures will not be visible, and their respective text values will have to be added manually.

Select Storm1.tex and Click OK.

<br>
Importing Textures

Drucej:

Getting Started
At times you may find that the textures provided are not what you need or possibly too limited for your tastes. In this case the C4 Game Engine allows you to import your own personal *.tga files to use as textures for objects. Many programs such as Adobe Photoshop support this file format and can be used to create Targa files. Texture maps used by the C4 Engine have the .tex file extension. For more information about texture format, please go Importing a Texture. The most important thing you need to know for importing *.tga files is that they must be of length and width that is of a power of 2. (For Example: 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024...) If the length or width is not correct, you will receive an error message through the console saying that the import failed.

Importing a Targa File (*.tga)
Make sure that your *.tga file is placed somewhere in the Import folder before you begin. Start C4 and select Tools > Import Texture from the engine menu. The Import Texture window is displayed. Select the texture you want to import and click OK. A window is displayed that has import options. The default options are usually appropriate for importing a simple texture.

Then click OK. In the console you should see something like the following indicating success Imported Texture: *.tga. The texture imports into ..\C4\Data\tex. If you did not see that make sure to check your height and width size of the texture to ensure they are powers of two. You may now use your imported texture in the world editor to apply to objects.

To apply this material to an object in the world select the sphere either in a viewport or the scene graph and click Geometry > Set Material or simply press Ctrl-M. Your material is now set to the sphere! You may use a single material for many objects in your scene. Try applying additional materials to other objects in your scene.

E.g. the next time the file needs saving, choose Save Word As ... and change the name to Base-01, Base-02 etc.
<br>
<br>Creating a Skybox
<br>
